Disruption of Services - Electric
PURPOSE:
To notify the proper service of failure, and steps to be taken in the event of failure.

PROCEDURE:
In the event of commercial electrical service failure, the following steps will be taken:

After administrative approval, switchboard will announce on the P.A. system the following; “YOUR ATTENTION PLEASE, YOUR ATTENTION PLEASE:  We are temporally operating on emergency generator power. Please refer to the policy in the Safety Manual under Emergency Management.” 

Check to make sure the electrical generating plant is functioning and that adequate emergency power is provided to the following ESSENTIAL SERVICES:
Alarm Systems
Blood, bone and tissue storage units
Obstetrical delivery rooms
Egress illumination
Elevators (at least one)
Emergency care areas
Emergency communication system
Illumination of exit signs
Medical air compressors
Medical/surgical vacuum systems
Newborn nurseries
Operating rooms
Postoperative recovery rooms
Special care units

Note: Arrangements with Ziegler Cat have been made for access to two portable generators. If emergency generators are not functioning the Director of Engineering will contact Ziegler Cat for delivery of portable generators.  Contact will be made by phone or runners.

Ask them to determine how long the service will be out.

After commercial electric service is restored, check for proper operation of:
Air Compressors
Air Conditioning
Boilers
Elevators
Motors
Pumps
Vacuum Pumps, etc.
Ventilating Systems

Switchboard will notify all departments when service is restored.
